Rain and Heat Forecast to December: How to Stay Sun-Smart in the Maldives' Showery Season

The next few months in the Maldives look set to be both a little wetter and a little warmer than usual. That is no reason to change your plans, just a reason to pack for both sunshine and showers.

Here is what the forecast says, and a few simple habits for enjoying the sunny spells in between.

What the forecast says

The Maldives Meteorological Service's outlook, issued on 17 October, says above-normal rainfall is likely across the country from October to December 2026. Both daytime highs and overnight lows are also likely to be above normal, according to the outlook.

Part of the reason lies far away. The Met Service's climate bulletin says El Niño is strong, with the Niño-3.4 index at +2.1°C in September, and is expected to peak around December. It adds that a positive Indian Ocean Dipole is likely to develop.

The same bulletin notes that warmer conditions may raise the risk of heat stress, which is a good reason to pace your days and look after yourself in the warmth.

Showers come and go

For visitors, the good news is that rain in the Maldives rarely settles in for long. The southwest monsoon normally runs from mid-May to November, and rain usually falls in short showers with sunny periods in between, the Met Service explains.

In practice, that often means a bright morning, a passing shower, then sunshine again. Those sunny spells can be strong, so it helps to be ready for them even on a grey-looking day.

Simple sun-smart habits

A few easy routines go a long way:

  • Don't skip sunscreen on cloudy days. The sun can return quickly between showers. Choose a reef-safe sunscreen and reapply after swimming.

  • Cover up. A long-sleeved layer and a wide-brimmed hat are simple ways to keep the midday sun off your skin.

  • Find shade at midday. Plan snorkelling and walks for the morning or late afternoon, and rest in the shade when the sun is highest.

  • Drink plenty of water. With warmer days and nights expected, keep a bottle with you and sip regularly.

  • Keep plans flexible. If a shower rolls through, enjoy a slow hour indoors and head back out when it passes.

Packing for both

A small beach bag that covers both sunshine and showers makes the day easy: sunscreen, a hat, a light long-sleeve layer, water and something to read while a shower passes.

Our Bucket Hat and Embroidered Cap are easy to keep in that bag for the walk from your villa to the beach. For the sun itself, rely on shade, sunscreen and covering up. Every piece we sell is made to order, so nothing is overproduced.

Warm water, soft rain and bright breaks of sunshine: it is a lovely, gentle season to be on the islands.
