Peak Season Gets Easier: Virgin Atlantic Returns and VietJet Opens Ho Chi Minh City to Malé
The journey to the Maldives has always been part of the ritual. This winter, from two very different directions, it becomes a little simpler.
As the high season approaches, two airline announcements open the islands more easily to travellers from the United Kingdom and from Southeast Asia. Here is what each one offers.
From London: Virgin Atlantic returns
Virgin Atlantic is bringing back its seasonal direct service to the Maldives on 27 October 2026.
The schedule builds gradually. Flights run three times a week until 1 December 2026, then move to a daily service, which lines up well with the months many people associate with winter sun.
The airline is already selling 2026/2027 Maldives holidays and packages from London Heathrow, with connections from other UK cities. For those who like to plan a December or new-year escape well ahead, the timing is helpful.
From Ho Chi Minh City: VietJet's new route
The second story comes from the east. According to VnExpress, VietJet began selling tickets on 8 October 2026 for a new route between Ho Chi Minh City and Malé, travelling via Colombo.
Service begins on 5 December 2026, with three round trips a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, operated by Airbus A320.
VnExpress published a sample schedule, in local times:
Outbound: Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) 07:05 to Colombo (CMB) 10:50, then Colombo 12:15 to Malé (MLE) 13:10.
Return: Malé 14:10 to Colombo 16:05, then Colombo 17:05 to Ho Chi Minh City 23:50.
An early-afternoon arrival in Malé leaves room to reach many resorts the same day, and the same schedule was also reported by Báo Xây dựng ahead of the peak tourism season.
Packing for the hop
Whichever route you take, a Maldives trip is rarely a single flight. It is a sequence: the long-haul leg, a pause in an airport lounge, a seaplane or speedboat, and finally a bare-footed walk along a jetty.
That rhythm rewards packing lightly and keeping a few essentials close. A sunscreen, a book, a layer for the cabin, something for the first swim. Our tote bags are made for that kind of carrying, roomy enough for the day and easy to sling over a shoulder between connections. A travel tumbler, filled before boarding, earns its place too.
A gentler start to the season
Neither announcement is dramatic on its own. Together, they make the islands feel a little nearer for two quite different groups of travellers, at precisely the moment the weather in many home cities begins to turn.
If you have been thinking about a winter escape, these new options may be the quiet nudge you needed. Check the airlines' own pages for current schedules before booking, and leave a little room in the bag for sand.
