Domestic Flight Fares Frozen for Three Years: Good News for Guesthouse Travellers

Good news for island-hoppers. While international air tickets have climbed in recent years, domestic flights within the Maldives have stayed at the same price.

For travellers who like to go beyond the resort belt and stay in local-island guesthouses, that makes this a good moment to look at the outer atolls.

Three years without a fare rise

Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen said no domestic ticket or sector fare has been raised in the past three years, PSM News reports.

Over the same period, he said, international airlines have raised prices by about 30 to 40% because of fuel costs, according to Maldives Tourism Review.

Keeping fares flat has taken some effort. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu stepped in on three occasions to block proposed domestic fare increases, MV+ reports.

A lower fare for guesthouse travel

There is a further bonus for guesthouse travellers. Fares for passengers travelling in connection with island guesthouse businesses have recently been reduced below earlier levels, according to PSM News.

If your trip includes a guesthouse stay on a local island, it is worth asking your guesthouse or booking agent whether your domestic flight qualifies.

An honest note

The Minister was also candid that domestic fares remain higher than he would like, Maldives Tourism Review notes. Domestic flights are still a real part of a trip budget, so it pays to plan your route sensibly.

Even so, a stable fare makes planning easier. You can price a multi-island trip with more confidence, without worrying that the hop to the next atoll will cost more by the time you book.

Why the outer atolls are worth it

Guesthouse stays offer a different side of the Maldives. You share the island with the people who live there, eat where they eat, and see daily life alongside the lagoons and sandbanks.

A few simple tips help:

  • Build in time. Domestic schedules and onward boat transfers need to line up, so leave a little slack between connections.

  • Ask your guesthouse first. Hosts often know the best way to reach their island and can help with transfers.

  • Respect local customs. Local islands have their own dress norms, so pack something that covers shoulders and knees for walking around the village.

Packing for island-hopping

Island-hopping calls for easy, simple layers. Our Signature Tee goes from the domestic flight to a local-island café without a second thought. Every piece is made to order, only after you buy it, so we don't overproduce or hold unsold stock.

With fares holding steady, there has rarely been a better time to see a little more of the Maldives.
